Where the Bourbon Brothers™ Method comes from

Fifteen years. Four hundred blind pours. One method.

Fifteen years ago, a professor of medicine in Greenville, South Carolina started blind-tasting dusty bourbon with a crew of friends who called themselves the Distinguished Gentleman's Club. They didn't just drink... they documented. Four hundred blind sessions. Photographed lineups. A method sharpened pour by pour until a Stitzel-Weller couldn't hide from a Bernheim in the dark.

He'd already spent a career teaching — AP biology to high schoolers, medicine to medical and dental students, and years in practice where the entire craft was asking the question that gets a person to the answer themselves. The Socratic method didn't arrive with the app. It's how he's taught for thirty years. The bourbon just gave it a glass to work with.

Along the way, that crew co-founded the Medicinal Whiskey Charity — and turned bourbon culture into over $2 million for children's charities across the Carolinas. Is this AI?

Yes — disclosed plainly, and proudly. The tasting method is human-authored: John McKillop's Bourbon Brothers™ Method, built across 400+ documented blind tastings and published in the novel Bourbon Brothers, written without generative AI. The guide in the app is Claude — Anthropic's frontier AI — running that human method. We never blur that line in either direction. To our knowledge, it's the first AI guide built to run a deductive tasting session — and the only one running a published method.

What bottles does it work on?

Any bourbon — shelf staples, allocated releases, store picks, and dusties. Sessions are built from each pour's publicly documented profile. When a bottling has a thin public record, the guide says so plainly and reads the distillate family with you instead of inventing notes. That honesty is a feature, not a disclaimer.

What happens to my tasting notes?

Your Palate Profile is private to your account — add your email and it syncs across your devices; it's never sold or used to train anything, and you can export or delete it any time. Our server logs never contain what you type. Privacy policy.

Is this a drinking app?

It's a tasting app — education and appreciation, for adults 21+. Your guide encourages small pours, water alongside, and savoring. It makes no health claims of any kind and never will.

Why isn't this in the app store?

Because a store would put a download, a review queue, and a toll between you and your pour.
